Bearing a name inspired by the Decembrist revolt, an 1825 attempted military coup in Russia, The Decemberists blend folk rock, indie pop, and country rock with lyrical content heavy on historical fiction and folklore. These songs contain an impressively high body count, which stems from an assortment of unsavory ends including forbidden love suicide pacts, mining disasters, filicide, wars, and drownings. This playlist is peppered with a cast of unconventional characters: mournful barrow boys, girl ghosts, murderous fathers, shape-shifting cranes, and mariner-swallowing whales.
